Day of Action

United Way Day of Action

Melissa Young, United Way Executive Director, Lilly Freeman, Smart Start Kay County Coordinator and Dianna Gemmill, United Way Volunteer gave out 170 new books to local children at the summer feeding program.

Each year, United Way of Ponca City joins with hundreds of other United Ways around the world to participate in the United Way Day of Action. This year’s event was held at the community’s summer feeding program at First Lutheran School. United Way staff and volunteers surprised the children with a treasure-trove of new books to choose from and take home. Reading is the key to a successful life, but children should know that reading is fun too, says Young.  By providing children with books, United Way wanted to encourage reading and enhance literacy for the upcoming school year.  United Way’s Education focus partners supported in 2015 are Boys Scouts Cimarron Council, Child Development Center, Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, Smart Start Kay County, YMCA, Jump Start Reading, Math, Science and Character Camp and The Born Learning Trail located at 5th Street Park.

If you would like to be a volunteer for this year’s campaign or need information on United Way, its partner agencies and initiatives call Melissa at 580.765.2476 or stop by 205 N. 2nd Street from 8:30-4:30pm Monday-Friday. “Like us on Facebook” and check out our newly designed website, www.unitedwayponcacity.org.
